23106, 23111

The NZ Journalists Training Organisation has revised the unit standards listed above.

Date new versions published                                              January 2008

Planned review date                                                               December 2012 (no change)

Reason for the revision

These unit standards were developed as part of a wide ranging review, of Journalism standards, that started in March 2006 and was completed when they were registered in October 2007.  In that review unit standard 23106 (25 credits) replaced unit standards 10355, 10356, 10357, and 10365 (combined credits 31); and unit standard 23111 (25 credits) replaced unit standards 10366, 10367 and 10368 (combined credit 75).

During the review of the National Diploma in Journalism with strands in Magazine, Newspaper, Radio, and Television [Ref: 0326] now renamed the National Diploma in Journalism (Multi-media) (Level 5), it became apparent that the total number of credits required for the qualification did not meet the following credit requirements for a diploma.  A diploma must:

·      be registered at level 5, 6, or 7, with the top 72 credits defining the level at which it can be registered

·      have at least 120 of all credits contributing to the qualification at level 4 or above.

The outcomes of the two major standards in the qualification were reassessed, and it was decided that the credits had been undervalued and did not recognise the time required for learners to meet all the outcomes covered.  It was agreed to increase the credits for both of the standards from 25 to 32.

Main changes resulting from the revision

Credits for both unit standards 23106 and 23111 have increased from 25 to 32.

Impact on existing qualifications

While no qualifications contain the revised standards, they are replacements for standards in the National Diploma in Journalism with strands in Magazine, Newspaper, Radio, and Television [Ref: 0326], which has been renamed the National Diploma in Journalism (Multi-media) (Level 5).  As version 4 of the qualification has been designed to meet the requirements of existing one year full-time diploma courses delivered by polytechnics and universities, it not envisaged that those courses will require any changes as a result of the increases in credits.
