InfraTrain New Zealand has revised the unit standards listed above.

Date new versions published                                              January 2008

Planned review date                                                               October 2009 (no change)

Reason for the revision

These unit standards were revised following feedback from industry during a qualification review.  Industry advised that in standard 1512 the prerequisite standard 20499 might restrict people working in the asphalt paving sector from achieving standard 1512 because it covered competencies required for chipseal, not asphalt paving activities.  Basic knowledge of bitumen safety covered in standard 20449 was more appropriate for people working with asphalt mixes.

At the same time, an error was noted whereby standard 20449 was required as a prerequisite for standard 1505.  1505 covers site factors to be considered when designing chipseal surfacings and their pretreatment systems.  Underpinning knowledge of bitumen safety is neither relevant nor critical to achievement of standard 1505.

It was also pointed out that the asphalt paving machine standards were placed at too high a level compared with other standards for operators of surfacing and civil construction plant.  The outcomes of standards 13519 and 20447 provided a better match with knowledge and skills covered by the level 3 descriptors.

Main changes resulting from the revision

·      Prerequisite removed from standard 1505.

·      Prerequisite standard 20449 replaced by standard 20455 in standard 1512.

·      Level decreased from 4 to 3 in standards 13519 and 20447.

·      Editorial amendments to title, elements and purpose statement of 1512.
