Revision of Split System Air Conditioning qualification

National Certificate in Split System Air Conditioning [Ref: 1242]

Competenz has revised the qualification listed above that was registered in June 2006.

Date new versions published                                                                    January 2008

The review of these qualifications is planned to take place in         December 2010

Reason for the revision

In the short time that this qualification has been available it has become obvious that the brazing requirements in this qualification were significantly in excess of industry requirements.  A more focussed standard on purge brazing of refrigeration piping has since been registered, and is incorporated in version 2.

Main changes resulting from the revision

Version 2 was issued in order to substitute the welding safety and brazing standards with a new standard written specifically for brazing of refrigeration piping.

Changes to structure and content

·      Unit 2679, Join metals using torch brazing and soldering and Unit 21907, Demonstrate and apply knowledge of safe welding procedures under supervision were removed from the qualification.

·      Unit 23959, Prepare and purge braze piping for refrigeration and air conditioning was added to the qualification.

·      The credit value was consequently reduced from 58 to 53.

For detailed information see Review Summaries on the NZQA website.

All new trainees will be enrolled in version 2.

People currently working towards version 1 of this qualification may either complete version 1 or transfer to version 2.  Last date for award of version 1 is 31 December 2009.

This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards.  For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards - see table below.
