Review of Engineering qualification

Competenz has completed the review of the qualification listed above.

Summary of review and consultation process

 

In response to industry requests, Competenz reviewed the qualification to incorporate a Mechanical Services strand, to cater for careers in refrigeration, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, piped services systems, and building systems management.  Key stakeholders involved in the review included representatives from the refrigeration, heating, ventilating and air conditioning industry and a consortium of Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics.

 

Main changes resulting from the review

 

A new strand for Mechanical Services, comprising six standards from the domain of Applied Principles of Mechanical Engineering, was added to the qualification.

Changes to structure and content

·      The purpose statement was updated to more accurately describe the purpose and focus of the qualification

·      An extra strand in Mechanical Services was added to cater for careers in the refrigeration, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning sectors

·      Standards 24530-24535 were included in the Mechanical Services strand

·      The National Certificate in Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (Mechanical Services) (Level 5) [Ref: 0897] was added as a possible pathway to the diploma

·      Credit transfer arrangements were updated to include exemptions for holders of the Trade Certificate/Advanced Trade Certificate in Fitting and Turning

·      Exemption for standard 21775 was removed

·      Expiring standard 7452 in the optional strand in Practical Endorsement was replaced with standard 25463

·      Contact details for the standard setting body were updated.

 

Transition

 

There are no transition implications for people currently enrolled in programmes leading to the award of version 2.  The last date for assessments to take place for version 2 is December 2012.

 

All new candidates will be enrolled in programmes leading to the award of version 3.

 

It is not intended that anyone is disadvantaged by this review, and the above arrangements have been designed for a smooth transition.  However, anyone who feels they have been disadvantaged may appeal to:

Key to Qualification Review Categories

 

Category A

The qualification is published as a new version with the same NQF ID

Changes are made to SSB name, contact details or purpose statement

Category B

The qualification is published as a new version with the same NQF ID

Changes are made to title, rules or components

The new version of the qualification recognises a similar skill set to that recognised by the previous version

The SSB is confident that people awarded the new or previous version are comparable in terms of competence

Category C

A new (replacement) qualification is published with new NQF ID
