The next qualification review is planned to take place during 2014.

Summary of review and consultation process

No training programmes for the National Certificate in Marine Sales and Services (Marine Retail) (Level 4) [Ref: 0549] were ever implemented and as a result there were no registered trainees.  BITO conducted widespread consultation with all major employers in this sector which confirmed the qualification was not considered to be 'fit for purpose'.

As a result a new qualification was developed that had a wider range of standards including eight new standards developed to meet the needs of the marine retail and distribution sectors of the industry.  The content of the qualification was expanded to include Distribution skills, as well those from the Retail sector.  Consultation included the Retail Institute which supports the new qualification.

Main changes resulting from the review

A replacement qualification was developed.  It has a compulsory section and three elective sections that allow trainees, employers and providers the flexibility to tailor programmes to meet individual skill needs that reflect the diverse roles within the marine retail and distribution sectors of the industry.

Only two of the standards from the replaced qualification were retained, they are standard 407 in Elective 1, and standard 67 in Elective 2.  The compulsory section now includes a wider range of skills relevant to Marine Retail as well as Marine Distribution, along with eight new standards developed by BITO to fill skill gaps required by this sector.
