Summary

This is a planned review of the Level 5 unit standards in the Engineering - Fabrication domain.  Polytechnic tutors, assessors, industry experts, and employers have been consulted during the review and all feedback incorporated into the unit standards.

A key issue concerned the supervision aspects covered in unit standards 2426-2429 for key fabrication supervision.  Feedback indicated that in practice, supervision rarely fell into clear cut activities as suggested by the existing standards, and industry would be better served by a single standard covering all aspects of fabrication supervision.

The reviewed standards were endorsed by the Sector Advisory Group on 10 February 2010.

Main changes

The review process resulted in the following changes to the unit standards:

·      unit standards 2426-2429 were replaced by unit standard 26418, a single 30 credit unit standard, as it better represents the work of supervisors in the fabrication industry;

·      title of unit standard 16957 was changed;

·      unit standard16957 was amended to a single element;

·      credit value for unit standard 16957 was increased from 4 to 6 to better reflect the range of knowledge required to demonstrate competence for this unit standard.

Category C unit standards will expire at the end of December 2014
