Summary
The Māori Performing Arts unit standards were reviewed as part of their planned review cycle. The standards were reviewed and amended to ensure that they are relevant and fit for purpose, and that their outcomes are achievable, coherent, and consistent with valid assessment practices.
In addressing issues identified during the review process, the Whakaruruhau recommended that one standard should be expired. The standard focussed too much on areas that were not necessary for compiling resource materials for teaching Māori Performing Arts, which was the main outcome for the standard. A replacement standard was developed that put the emphasis on gathering, collating and documenting information for teacher resources.
The Whakaruruhau also gave a lot of consideration to the credit values of the standards, including feedback from providers and moderators. Changes were made accordingly to the credits of some standards (in particular to the poi standards). However, some standards haven’t changed credit values, but have had their content amended.
The last date for assessment of superseded versions of the reviewed standards is 31 December 2019. Results will not be accepted where the assessment date is after the last date for assessment of superseded versions of the unit standards.
Main changes
· The titles of unit standards 13363, 13364, 13365 and 22755 were changed in line with amendments made to the standards or to better reflect the standards’ outcomes.
· Changes to purpose statements, explanatory notes, outcomes, evidence requirements, and range statements were made to ensure clarity for users.
· Credit values for standards 13367, 13368 and15019 were increased to better reflect the time required for learning, practise, and assessment. For unit standards 13367 and 13368 (the poi standards), this took into account the added difficulty and, hence, time for learning and executing movements that are associated with poi (an extra element of performance).
· Unit standard 19909 was replaced by a new Level 6 standard 29565, which focuses on the preparation of information for teaching Māori Performing Arts 24095.
· A new Level 2 unit standard was created for the Māori Performing Arts Creation domain.
Category C unit standards will expire at the end of December 2019
