NZQA National Qualifications Services has completed the review of the unit standards listed above.
Date new versions published May 2017
Planned review date December 2022
Summary
The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) unit standards were reviewed to align with the proposed new New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 4) in content and credit value. The five EAP standards will be mandatory for this qualification.
In 2016, a panel was assembled of people with the collective expertise in English language education, and English as a mainstream secondary school subject. There was representation from the tertiary sector (polytechnic, Te Wānanga, university), secondary schools; and the national moderator.
The new drafts of the standards were developed and circulated to the following members of the wider network for consultation and endorsement:
· poytechnics, and private training establishments that had recorded results against these standards;
· providers of programmes leading to New Zealand Certificates in English Language (Level 4)
· secondary schools
· other stakeholders who had expressed an interest in being part of the consultation process.
Main changes
· Where necessary, the performance criteria have been reworded and more information has been added to ensure consistent interpretation of requirements.
· The standards have been adjusted to sit at IELTS 6.0 and Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) mid B2. This has been achieved by adjusting text length, text complexity, assessment conditions and/or the range of requirements.
· Units 22749 and 22982: the number of texts have been reduced from two to one to more accurately reflect the teaching, learning and assessment time as indicated by the credit value.
· Unit 22750 and 22751: credit value has increased from 5 credits to 6 credits to better reflect the teaching, learning and assessment time.
· A last date for superseded versions of the standards was specified.
