Summary

This unit standard was part of a wider review relating to mechanised harvesting operations on slopes.  The review was initiated as a result of advances in available technology, changes in sector work processes and data from accident reports.

Industry experts identified that unit standard 6947 did not adequately cover the current approach to log extraction or the risk factors associated with that work.  The review also identified the additional knowledge and skills required by machine operators and crew managers in relation to the recent introduction of cable-assisted machines working on steep slopes.  This technology has been introduced to increase operational efficiency, reduce environmental damage and, most importantly, to improve worker safety.

New units covering the identified additional knowledge and skills were developed in consultation with a technical advisory group comprising: equipment operators, equipment manufacturers, forest engineering researchers and WorkSafe representatives.

Main changes

· Unit standard 6947 was replaced by unit standard 30587.

· Four new unit standards were developed.

The Category C unit standard will expire at the end of December 2021
