Summary

The unit standard was reviewed to update critical health and safety requirements that were missed in the most recent review that was carried out in 2019.

Consultation was carried out initially with marine crane operators in October 2022.  The reviewed version was sent out to the wider industry including skippers, marine engineers, and health and safety personnel in companies - Sealord, Talley, King Salmon and Sanfords from October to December 2022.  Discussions were also undertaken with maritime pilots and marine construction and barging companies.

Feedback was incorporated where valid in consultation with marine crane operators and a final version was agreed.

Main changes

· The unit title was updated to better reflect the content.

· Assessment requirements were added to Guidance Information to enable consistency of assessment.

· Theory performance criteria on hazards and vessel stability in a marine environment were added to Outcomes 1 and 2 to fill gaps in health and safety requirements.  Outcome 2 was previously Outcome 3.

· Additional performance criteria on load preparation were added to Outcome 2 to fill gaps in load preparation.

· Outcome 4 statement and performance criteria were rewritten to better reflect the skills and knowledge required.

The last date for assessment of superseded versions of Category B unit standards is December 2023
