Summary of development and consultation process |

This qualification is a new development that was overseen by Toi Mai WDC in conjunction with the New Zealand Piano Tuners and Technicians Guild (NZPTTG). The qualification was informed by preliminary engagements undertaken by NZPTTG on the need for a formal training pathway for piano tuners. Those consulted included both active piano tuners, and a broader group of stakeholders that used and were, in some cases, dependent on the services of piano tuners. Overall, the feedback indicated a nationwide shortage of adequately trained piano tuners to handle current demand for these services. It was also noted that the lack of a formal training pathway made it difficult to replenish what is now an aging workforce, and that the current, mostly informal, training types sometimes resulted in a standard of work below that required by users. Toi Mai WDC and NZPTTG undertook the development over three months from November 2022. The preliminary engagements played an important role in shaping the final qualification, with a focus on ensuring this covered the required fundamentals. The draft qualification was put out for consultation through an online survey hosted on the Toi Mai WDC website, alongside a Needs Analysis which summarised feedback received the preliminary engagements. All of the survey respondents supported listing of the qualification in its current form. |
