Waihanga Ara Rau Construction and Infrastructure Workforce Development Council has completed the review of the unit standards listed above.

Date new versions published                                                               June 2023

Planned review date                                                                              December 2028

Summary

Waihanga Ara Rau, the National Kitchen & Bathroom Association – NZ (NKBA), organisations with consent to assess, and representatives from the kitchen and bathroom design industry have reviewed the unit standards listed above to update them in line with current industry practice, and to ensure they are fit for purpose.

Consultation with industry representatives and consent to assess holders occurred from October 2022 to February 2023.  Feedback was received and decisions were made in consultation with the main provider and the technical advisory group of representatives from the kitchen and bathroom design industry that resulted in the changes outlined below.

Furthermore, two new unit standards were written to align with version 2 of the New Zealand Diploma in Design (Level 5) with strands in Kitchen Design, and Bathroom Design (with optional strand in Light Commercial Design) [Ref: 3221].

Main changes

·           Unit standard 25210 is set to expire on 31 December 2024 due to low recent usage.

·           Titles, purpose statements, legislation and references, assessment requirements, skill specifications, range statements, and performance level guidance were amended across the suite of unit standards to reflect the content and scope of the design work, and in line with current industry practice and standard template requirements.

·           Definitions were added across the suite of unit standards to clarify the meaning of industry-recognised terminology.

·           Unit standards 31560, 31561, 31565–31569 credits were amended to reflect notional learning, practice and assessment time as confirmed with industry representatives.

·           Unit standard 31562 was amended to remove the requirement for completion of a site inspection as this was recognised by industry representatives as a barrier to completion for some learners.

·           Unit standard 31563 was amended to remove the knowledge requirements for contracts and the tendering process as they were recognised by industry representatives as unnecessary for kitchen and bathroom designers.

·           Unit standard 31564 was amended as follows: two Te Ao Māori design principles were added as spatial design considerations of relevance to kitchen design; and the lists of mechanical plan and working drawing items were amended to reflect current industry requirements.

·           Unit standard 31565 was amended as follows: the requirement for specification and sourcing of products and materials was removed as industry representatives identified this as not required at this level; and the lists of surface materials and properties were amended to reflect current industry requirements.

·           Unit standard 31567 was amended as follows: the requirement for explanation of Pythagoras’ theorem and its practical application to design, and the reference to accepted conventions and applicable allowances were removed as they were recognised by industry representatives as not required at this level; knowledge of measurement tools used in the kitchen and bathroom industry was added as this was recognised by industry representatives as required at this level; and the list of units of measurement was amended to reflect current industry requirements.

·           Unit standard 31568 was amended to remove the reference to the design brief as this is now listed in the definitions.

·           Two new unit standards were written to align with the new optional strand in Light Commercial Design for version 2 of the New Zealand Diploma in Design (Level 5) [Ref: 3221].

Category D unit standard 25210 will expire at the end of December 2024.

The last date for assessment of superseded versions of Category B unit standards is December 2025.
