Toitū te Waiora Community, Health, Education and Social Services Workforce Development Council has completed the review of the unit standards listed above.

Date new versions published                                                               May 2023

Planned review date                                                                              December 2027

Summary

These standards were reviewed as part of a scheduled review.  The first aid standards are widely used, and as such Toitū te Waiora engaged and consulted widely across industry and interested parties between February and October 2022.  Engagement included an online survey, face-to-face meetings, online meetings, email correspondence, and phone consultation.

Main changes

·         Guidance information was updated to align with current format and style requirements.

·         All standards now use First Aid as a Life Skill as the primary source for references and accepted industry practice, available at First Aid qualifications - Toitū te Waiora (toitutewaiora.nz).

·         Standard 6400: Manage first aid in an emergency situation

§  Definition of hazards was added.

§  Burns were removed from the range covering injury and medical conditions.

§  The range covering major wounds was expanded to include gunshot, impalement, amputation, stabbing and crush injuries.

§  Internal injuries were included in the range covering major wounds.

§  Internal bleeding from the range covering major wounds was moved to standard 6402.

·         Standard 6401: Provide first aid

§  Dislocations were added to the range for performance criterion 1.1.

§  Skills and knowledge covering shock and bleeding were moved to standard 6402.

·         Standard 6402: Provide basic life support

§  Level increased from level 1 to level 2 on the NZQF to better align with the complexity of the revised standard.

§  Credits increased from 1 credit to 2 credits to reflect inclusion of new outcomes relating to treating life-threatening bleeding and shock.

§  Inclusion of assessment conditions for performance criterion 2.1, and Outcomes 3 and 4 in Guidance Information.

§  Inclusion of performance criterion 1.4 (‘Describe when and how to attach an AED’)

§  Inclusion of a new Outcome 3 (‘Manage first aid management for life-threatening bleeding’), based on bleeding content removed from unit standard 6400.

§  Inclusion of a new Outcome 4 (‘Provide first aid management for shock’), based on shock content removed from unit standard 6400.

·         Standard 25459: Provide First Aid for Young Children

§  Standard is set to expire without replacement.  The narrow focus of this standard was noted during consultation, and it was considered that outcomes in standards 6400, 6401, and 6402 were preferable for training people to deal with first aid emergencies and saving lives across the whole of Aotearoa.

Category D unit standards will expire at the end of December 2025

The last date for assessment of superseded versions of Category B unit standards is 31 December 2024
