Summary

Waihanga Ara Rau, organisations with consent to assess, and representatives from the forestry earthworks industry have reviewed the unit standards listed above to update them in line with current industry practice, and to ensure they are fit for purpose.  Consultation with industry representatives and consent to assess holders occurred from September 2022 to January 2023.  Feedback was received and decisions were made in consultation with the main training provider and technical advisory group of representatives from the forestry earthworks industry that resulted in the changes outlined below.

Main changes

·                Legislation and references, assessment requirements, outcomes and performance criteria, and range statements were amended across the suite of unit standards in line with current industry requirements.

·                Unit standards 20474–20476 have been reclassified from Domain: Infrastructure Works Utilities to Domain: Forestry Earthworks as industry representatives identified these three standards as more appropriate to the Forestry Earthworks industry.

·                Unit standards 30920, 30923 and 30924 have had references to ‘supervisor’ and ‘team’ removed throughout as these references presented a barrier to completion for some learners.  ‘Team’ has been replaced with ‘forest users’ as this provides opportunity for learners to still engage with other people in the forestry environment.

·                Unit standard 20474 was amended as follows: the level was decreased from 4 to 3 as industry representatives identified the knowledge requirements as more appropriate at this level; and performance criteria 2.3 was merged with 2.4 as both performance criteria relate to identification of information on maps.

·                Unit standard 20475 was amended to increase the credit value from 4 to 5 to reflect the addition of one new performance criteria and the knowledge requirements of the learner.

·                Unit standard 20476 was amended as follows: the credit value was increased from 15 to 20 as industry representatives deem the requirements now specified in the standard to be equivalent to 200 hours of learning and assessment; higher grades were removed for consistency across the suite of standards; and the requirements for Outcome 2 were amended to reflect current industry requirements for forestry earthworks activities.

·                Unit standard 30919 was amended to remove references to ‘pipe’ as not all culverts installed in the forestry earthworks environment are pipe culverts.

·                Unit standard 30921 was amended as follows: title and purpose statement were amended as forestry infrastructure must be maintained – not forestry earthworks; and the performance criteria for Outcome 1 were reordered to reflect the logical order of tasks according to current industry practice.

The last date for assessment of superseded versions of Category B unit standards is December 2025.
