Summary

In 2020 the Ministry of Education in association with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority initiated a Review of Achievement Standards (RAS) across all New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa (TMoA) derived achievement standards as part of a comprehensive NCEA change programme. This Ministry of Education-led work programme aims to strengthen NCEA through delivering seven key changes:

• Make NCEA more accessible
• Equal status for mātauranga Māori in NCEA
• Strengthen literacy and numeracy requirements and assessments
• Fewer, larger standards
• Simplify NCEA's structure
• Clearer pathways to further education or work
• Keep NCEA Level 1 optional.

The changes were informed by insights and feedback gathered during the public engagement on the NCEA Review in 2018, and were confirmed by the Government in February 2020. They are designed to improve well-being, equity, coherence, pathways and credibility – for students and teachers alike.

Main changes

· Te Reo Matatini standard 32414 was replaced by two new 5 credit unit standards for ease of assessment and to provide more clarity around the outcome being sought.

· Pāngarau standard 32412 changed title to more accurately describe the outcome being sought.

The last date for assessment of superseded versions of Category B unit standards is December 2024
