Summary

Hanga-Aro-Rau Workforce Development Council undertook a review of the Passive Fire Protection domain unit standards from November 2022 and July 2023 as part of the 5-year review cycle. Regular Technical Advisory Group (TAG) meetings were held with a wide range of industry stakeholders, including representatives from fire protection industry associations, employers, training providers, assessment writers and subject matter experts. Passive fire protection was reviewed separately from the active fire protection review to achieve clarity and wider consultation.

Five new unit standards have been developed to address gaps in passive fire protection specific skills and knowledge identified by the stakeholders.

All feedback received was incorporated and endorsed for registration by the stakeholders in July 2023.

Main changes

·      Guidance information and document formatting were updated across the suite of unit standards.

·      Standard setting body information was updated from Competenz to Hanga-Aro-Rau Workforce Development Council.

·      Performance criteria and range statements were updated to accurately reflect current industry practice and legislation.

·      Language was simplified for clarity of intent.

·      The titles of unit standard 26423, 26424 and 31917 were changed to reflect industry practice and compliance practices.

·      The development of five new unit standards (33298, 33299, 33300, 33301, and 33302) addresses a range of key aspects in passive fire protection, including compliance with the New Zealand Building Code, product functionality in fire protection systems, adherence to New Zealand standards, and interpretation of fire safety reports, architectural drawings, and building services drawings. Additionally, these standards cover substrates and their fire rating, as well as principles related to fire development and the impact of smoke and fire on people and components, collectively enhancing expertise and awareness in passive fire protection systems.

The last date for assessment of superseded versions of Category B unit standards is December 2026
