This qualification is designed for people who will be working in the field of Adult Education and Training, and who will be working with Maori students. People who achieve this qualification will be able to explain Maori human development theory in terms of Maori concepts, values, and practices.

People awarded this qualification are able to identify the diverse cultural needs of Maori learners and establish and maintain a culturally safe and inclusive learning environment.

The elective sections are designed to allow flexibility to accommodate different personal, work, and skill requirements. The first elective requires the candidate to develop their knowledge of Maori human development theory in relation to adolescents, adults, or kaumatua. The second elective provides a range of three options. Option A allows people to extend their knowledge in the areas of Maori human development theory for adolescents, adults, and/or kaumatua, depending on the standard selected in Elective 1. Option B allows people the opportunity to build on their existing foundation of Maori knowledge and skills by developing their knowledge in Te Reo Maori and Tikanga Practices. Option C allows people the opportunity to select the most appropriate knowledge and skills from Field Maori and the Adult Education and Training subfield to best suit the type of Adult Education and Training in which they are involved.

There are no prerequisites to entry. Likewise, those selecting Option C may, depending on the choices made, use credits gained towards the National Certificate in Adult Education and Training (Level 4) [Ref: 0378], which in turn can lead to the National Diploma in Adult Education and Training (Level 5) [Ref: 0380].
