Strategic Purpose Statement
This is the second in a suite of four whakairo qualifications. The National Certificate in Whakairo (Tuturu) [Ref: 0521] is designed for people with no or some knowledge in whakairo and its designed to assist them to acquire the essential core practical knowledge and skills in whakairo.

The compulsory section recognises the practical skills required for whakairo.

Elective one recognises the use of te reo and tikanga Maori and, the concept of sustainable management in a whakairo context to complement the candidate''s practical knowledge and skills in whakairo.

Elective two gives the candidates an overview of other optional pathways in whakairo. The options are many and vary so the candidate can relate their newly acquired skills in whakairo to other fields that may lead into a career or employment to extend or complement their knowledge and skills in whakairo.

People awarded this qualification are able to demonstrate practical skills in conservation practices, manaaki manuhiri, carving material surfaces to create Maori art, and knowledge in design principles and pattern conventions used to generate whakairo designs.

This qualification may build on the National Certificate in Whakairo (Te Ara Tauira) (Level 3) [Ref: 1590]. This qualification may lead on to the National Diploma in Whakairo (Level 5) [Ref: 0745], and the National Diploma in Whakairo (Level 6) [Ref: 0746].
