Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of the Diploma in Hospitality Operations (Level 5) is to prepare students with the skills and knowledge needed to enter the hospitality industry in the area of hospitality operations, including the general industry environment, principles and practices in the business environment, communication skills, accounting/finance skills and information technology applications. Given that many entry positions in the hospitality require employees to work in the food and beverage operations area there is also a strong focus in this area.
Graduate profile
Diploma in Hospitality Operations (Level 5) graduates will be able to: - see the hospitality industry as an integrated whole, and understand how all the different operations work together to enhance customer experience and produce successful business outcomes; - participate as team members in strategies designed to maximise business effectiveness; - demonstrate skills in food and beverage production and service operations; - communicate effectively internally with co-workers and management, and externally with customers and other stakeholders; - use a range of computer applications relevant to the hospitality industry, including basic accounting and finance operations. Students completing the qualification will be able to continue on to study in the Diploma in Hospitality Operations Management (Level 6) or the Bachelor of Hospitality Management. Students with the Diploma in Hospitality Operations (Level 5) are able to work in a range of positions in hospitality operations including customer service, food and beverage production, food and beverage service, clerical roles in hospitality enterprises, and reservations and sales.
Entry Requirements
NCEA Level 3 (minimum of 14 credits in each of three subjects at Level 3 including a minimum of 9 credits in mathematics at Level 1 or higher and a minimum of 8 literacy credits at Level 2 or higher); or - NCEA equivalent (minimum of 14 credits in each of four subjects at Level 2 including a minimum of 9 credits in mathematics at Level 1 or higher and a minimum of 8 literacy credits at Level 2 or higher); or - hold an equivalent overseas qualification; and - have attained the age of 17 years; and - have an English level equivalent to IELTS 6.0; or - gain approval under Admission Regulation 3: Special Admission.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
