Strategic Purpose Statement
The National Diploma in Reo Maori (Level 6) [Ref: 1197] is a certificate awarded to people who have demonstrated the knowledge and skills required for achievement in the domains Korero, Whakarongo, Tuhituhi and Panui. It is designed to recognise the advanced skills, knowledge, and competence required for people to use te reo Maori at a high level, for a range of roles.

The compulsory section recognises the ability to use te reo Maori competently and confidently in diverse environments. This will enable the candidate to broaden employment options and function effectively in social, legal, educational, business and general professional situations where knowledge of te reo Maori is required.

Through their advanced knowledge of te reo Maori they are able to take part in advanced and high level conversations with speakers of te reo Maori, understand what is said, and contribute relevant comments and dialogue. They are able to communicate their own ideas and opinions and may use te reo Maori creatively to explain and discuss their views. They can read an array of authentic te reo Maori resources and materials and write expressively and meaningfully on a wide variety of topics. They are able to use a range of strategies relating to the effective learning of te reo Maori, and their behaviour is culturally appropriate in most social situations and interactions involving native speakers.

The elective section allows candidates to select from a diverse range of outcomes from field Maori to allow the qualification to be focused on the specific needs of the individual.

This qualification builds on the prerequisite National Diploma in Reo Maori (Level 5) [Ref: 1196]. It provides a basis for further study such as for the National Certificate in Reo Maori Media (Introductory Media Skills) [Ref: 1024]; the National Diploma in Reo Maori Media with strands in Journalism, Radio, and Television (Level 5) [Ref: 1146]; the National Certificate in Tourism Maori (Level 4) [Ref: 1077]; and the National Diploma in Tourism Maori (Level 5) [Ref: 1096].
