Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is designed for people who would like to further their knowledge and skills in the art of whakairo from a Nga Mahi a te Whare Pora perspective, while encouraging the enhancement and maintenance of the integrity of Nga Mahi a te Whare Pora. The emphasis is on the practical aspects of whariki whakairo.

People awarded this qualification are able to demonstrate the necessary research knowledge, and practical skills required to design and weave whariki whakairo.

The compulsory section recognises the skills and knowledge required to prepare to dye whenu, and design and weave different mats; and also to research traditional and contemporary whariki design, usage, and patterns.

Elective 1 develops skills and knowledge of the gathering and preparation of raw materials (kuta, kiekie, or harakeke) for weaving.

Elective 2 allows candidates to choose standards from areas within field Maori that would enhance and extend the candidates'' weaving skills, and/or provide knowledge and skills in areas such as Tourism Maori, Hauora, Whenua, Te Aho Wahine, Maori Performing Arts Teaching, Tikanga, Reo Maori, and Maori Environmental Management.

This qualification is a further pathway for people who have met the requirements of the National Certificate in Nga Mahi a te Whare Pora (Pae Tuatahi (Level 2) [Ref: 0705] and/or the National Certificate in Nga Mahi a te Whare Pora (Pae Tuarua) (Level 4) [Ref: 0706]. It can also lead on to the National Diploma in Nga Mahi a te Whare Pora (Pae Tuawha) (Level 6) [Ref: 1641].
