Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the electricity supply industry with people who have sufficient knowledge, practical skills and experience to gain registration as a line mechanic in the distribution sector, in accordance with the registration requirements of the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB).
Graduates will be able to work safely to electricity supply industry standards, taking responsibility for their work and that of others and be capable of working independently whilst ensuring public safety.
Graduates with the optional strand will also be able to work with live low voltage lines.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply knowledge of electrical theory, and electricity supply industry standards and procedures to work as a distribution line mechanic in accordance with legislation.
- Apply a range of relevant communication skills to work as a distribution line mechanic.
- Ensure that health and safety requirements are met for the range of work undertaken by a distribution line mechanic.
- Apply knowledge of electrical theory, and electricity supply industry standards and procedures to the commissioning and maintenance of an electricity distribution network.

Graduates of the Live Low Voltage Lines strand will also be able to:
- Apply knowledge of electrical theory and electricity supply industry standards and procedures to work with live low voltage lines.
Education pathways
This qualification builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Electricity Supply (Introductory) (Level 2) [Ref: 2136].
This qualification may lead to additional qualifications in another sector of the industry or higher-level qualifications, including:
- New Zealand Certificate in Electricity Supply (Transmission Line Maintenance) (Level 4) with strands in Line Mechanics, and Structure Maintenance [Ref: 2705]
- New Zealand Certificate in Electricity Supply (Power Technician) (Level 5) [Ref: 3535].
Employment pathways
Graduates will be able to work in the electricity supply industry as a line mechanic in the distribution sector, installing, maintaining and replacing electricity distribution network equipment at an intermediate level.
