Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the Fire Protection industry with tradespeople/technicians who have the skills and knowledge to design, install, commission, maintain, and service fire detection and alarm systems and associated equipment.
The qualification includes an optional strand where technicians can specialise in installing and commissioning special hazards fire detection and alarm systems.
Graduates will work in accordance with the New Zealand Building Code, current Standards, regulations and ordinances, and other internationally accepted standards.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply knowledge of fire detection and alarm systems principles and practices when installing fire detection and alarm systems.
- Maintain tools and test equipment used in the fire detection and alarm industry sector.
- Work safely when installing, commissioning, maintaining, and servicing fire detection and alarm systems and using associated equipment.
- Design fire detection and alarm systems installations.
- Plan and prepare for installing fire detection and alarm systems components.
- Install fire detection and alarm systems components and complete installation documentation.
- Plan for and commission fire detection and alarm systems.
- Check, test, and inspect fire detection and alarm systems.
- Service fire detection and alarm systems.
- Report on and maintain the integrity of passive fire protection when installing fire detection and alarm systems.
- Apply knowledge of special hazards installation practices when installing special hazards fire detection and alarm systems.

Graduates of the Special Hazards strand will also be able to:
- Install special hazards fire detection and alarm systems.
- Commission special hazards fire detection and alarm systems.
Education pathways
This qualification may build on the New Zealand Certificate in Fire Detection and Alarm Systems (Level 3) [Ref: 2574].
There are no higher level qualifications in this sector; however, graduates may pathway to:
- New Zealand Certificate in Fixed Fire Protection Systems (Level 4) with an optional strand in Special Hazards Fixed Fire Protection Systems [Ref: 2577]; or
- New Zealand Certificate in Fire Protection Systems Technology (Inspections) (Level 4) with strands in Fire Detection and Alarm Systems, and Fixed Fire Protection Systems [Ref: 2579]; or
- New Zealand Certificate in Passive Fire Protection Systems (Level 4) [Ref: 2581].
This qualification may also lead to higher-level qualifications in management or engineering.
