Strategic Purpose Statement
All students in the Bachelor of Tourism Management will receive a good grounding in the general principles of tourism and the specific operation of tourism in New Zealand. Tourism Management studnets will gain knowledge of tourism management principles and will learn to critically analyse problems enabling them to come up with workable solutions to real problems in the tourism industry. They will also gain practical insights into the application of research to industry issues. Additionally, they will have had the opportunity to develop their interest in specialised aspects of the tourism industry.
Graduate profile
Bachelor of Tourism Management graduates will demonstrate the following skills, knowledge and qualities: a good understanding of the basic principles of tourism; the New Zealand context of tourism; functional literacy with the basic tools of mangement including accounting, marketing and management; an understanding of the economic principles underlying decision-making within the context of toursim; sensitivity to the cultural and social impacts of tourism; financial responsibilitiy and implementation of budgets; intellectual independence, critical thinking and analytical rigour neede to work with tourism industry issues; ability to acquire, understand and assess information from the global economy and the tourism industry, and a commitment to ongoing self-directed learing and collaborating with others in the industry to achieve sector volume growth and qualitative improvement. Graduates will be able to continue to postgraduate studies in Tourism Management or related field. Graduates can work in a tourism organisation, and, after a suitabel induction period, be ready to make a strong contribution in a middle management role.

Entry Requirements
A candidate for admission to this programme of study shall: - have a minimum of 14 NCEA credits in each of three subjects at Level 3, and a minimum of 14 numeracy credits at Level 1 or higher, and a minimum of 8 literacy credits at Level 2 or higher; or - have successfully undertaken tertiary study; or - have successfully completed the requirements for Level 4 qualification in Travel and Tourism; or - hold an equivalent overseas qualification; and - have attained the age of 17 years; and - have an English level equivalent to IELTS 6.0 (with no band less than 5.5) / TOEFL iBT 60 (with a writing score of 20) / PToE academic score of 50 / AIS Test of English Proficiency (TEP) 52/80 (with no band less than 12); or - gain approval under Admission Regulation 3: Special Admission.

Content
Students will receive foundation knowledge of management through the inclusion of core courses in accounting, mangement and marketing. At level 6 learning will become more tourism-specific with components covering the marketing, management, social and environmental aspects of tourism as well as the important skills of financial management. At level 7 studnets cover tourism policy planning and development and a range of choices in specialised aspects such as tourism events management, tourism entrepreneurship and toursim consumer behaviour. In addition, students complete either a research project or applied tourism management project, and may undertake industry practice in a tourism organisation.
