Strategic Purpose Statement
Students in the Graduate Diploma in Tourism Management will have improved knowledge and sound managerial skills relevant to management positions in the tourism, travel, hospitality and airlines industries. The programme is intended to provide the equivalent of a major in a subject other than that in which the student has majored for their first degree.
Graduate profile
Graduates will be able to: - Apply appropriate skills and knowledge from their first qualification to relevant contexts in the tourism industry. - Integrate relevant theory, experience and skills to implement best practice in specific areas of tourism operations and management. - Relate their experience in working in a tourism environment to the application of broader management principles. - Draw on the theories and tools of analysis they have learned to manage tourism organisations efficiently and enhance organisational performance. - Take responsibilities for their own learning, conduct independent investigation, identity problems, and develop creative solutions which exhibit academic rigour. - Communicate effectively with guests, prospective guests, co-workers, senior management, industry suppliers and other stakeholders. - Take responbility for practicing ongoing personal development in the tourism industry.
Education pathways
Graduates will be able to continue to postgraduate studies in tourism management, or engage in interdisciplinary postgraduate studies utilising their expertise gained in both the GDTM and prior degree studies.

Entry Requirements
A candidate for admission to this programme of study shall: - hold a bachelor's degree (at least equivalent to New Zealand pass standard) awarded by a tertiary institution approved by the Academic Board, or equivalent qualification; and - have an English level equivalent to IELTS 6.0 (with no band less than 5.5) / TOEFL iBT 60 (with a writing score of 20) / PToE academic score of 50 / AIS Test of English Proficiency (TEP) 52/80 (with no band less than 12); or - gain approval under Admission Regulation 3: Special Admission.

The Graduate Diploma in Tourism Management is a one-year full time programme consisting of 7 undergraduate courses with a total of 124 credits. The programme includes one level 5 course on principle of tourism (17 credits); two level 6 courses in management (17 and 18 credits respectively); and one level 7 course on policy, planning and development (18 credits). Students then choose an additional three level 7 courses from Tourism Management, Hospitality Management or Business (18 credits each). Students can choose to complete an internship (weighted as two courses) as part of this programme.
