Strategic Purpose Statement
The Certificate in Māori Language Level 4 is a qualification designed for learners of te reo Māori. The programme aims to further develop proficiency and fluency in te reo Māori in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing and presenting. The programme also aims to broaden the learner's knowledge of Māori culture and customs as revealed through the language and literature.
Included in the programme is knowledge of local Taranaki karakia, ngeri, pūrākau, waiata, whakataukī and its many genres and many varied forms.
Graduate profile
This qualification will provide students with the knowledge to enable them to return to their iwi, hapū and marae, taking these skills with them and/or simply being able to use them in a work, home or Māori community environment with a reasonable level of fluency and appropriateness.

The qualification aims to produce graduates with a variety of skills, which will assist them in entering training and/or employment in a variety of areas. Knowledge of te reo and tikanga Māori is considered by many employers as being advantageous in a workplace setting.

Students will be encouraged to become oral speakers of te reo while having practical application skills in the field of Māori culture.

A graduate from this programme will know how to read and write, listen and speak using te reo Māori accurately and fluently in a range of genre. They will also have an understanding of Māori culture and customary concepts including Taranaki tikanga as it applied historically and as it is used today.

The graduate will have a stronger sense of Māori identity, and confidence to utilise Māori knowledge in different contexts with a wider general knowledge of Māori histories and customs.
Education pathways
On successful completion of the programme graduates will be able to staircase onto Te Tohu Mōhiotanga (Diploma in Māori Language) (Level 5)
Employment pathways
A graduate will have skills and knowledge which will assist obtaining employment in roles which require a working knowledge of te reo and tikanga Māori, including roles within the public sector, education, Māori broadcasting, Māori development and iwi based initiatives.To find out more about employment opportunities click on the CareersNZ logo, then the provider who offers this qualification.
Entry Requirements
Entry criteria
The academic entry criteria is at least 48 credits at level 2 including 12 english/literacy credits, 12 te reo credits * and the remainder from any domain.
*Challenge test available for those who do not meet this criteria.

Entry to the programme will be in order of receipt of completed enrolments.

Credits
