Quality assurance of ITPs
Degree monitoring
NZQA monitors the delivery of all degrees offered by institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITPs).
The purpose of monitoring is to provide assurance to NZQA that the degree is being delivered as planned at the time of approval, and that the ITP is using the results of rigorous self assessment to inform the ongoing development of the course to meet changing stakeholder needs.
The principal monitoring process is through analysis of the ITP’s annual degree evaluation reports. These reports provide a summary of the way in which the degree has been delivered, the changes that have been made in response to stakeholder feedback, and the effectiveness of those changes.
During the early years of delivery of a degree, monitoring will also include an annual visit by a Monitor appointed by NZQA. Monitors are generally senior experienced academics from universities or other tertiary institutions, and are expert in the discipline area of the degree. Often they will have been members of the approval and accreditation panel that evaluated the degree application. Monitoring reports provide the ITP with valuable external peer review on the way the degree is being managed, and provide NZQA with an independent and neutral perspective on the course and its delivery.
