Degree monitoring
When a degree is approved and an institution is accredited to deliver it, NZQA appoints a monitor.
Generally, NZQA monitors degrees which have been accredited for several years by analysing an annual programme evaluation report from the provider. This process begins after initial monitoring has taken place and a provider has applied for and been granted approval by NZQA to transfer to monitoring by annual programme evaluation report. Once granted this process continues each year for the life of the degree.
Initial monitoring
Initial monitoring occurs in the initial years of delivery, and includes an annual visit to the provider and a report by a monitor appointed by NZQA.
An independent evaluator, also appointed by NZQA, will accompany the monitor for the first year's visit.
Subsequent monitoring
Monitoring will continue for the life of the degree. Future involvement of an independent evaluator after the first year will depend on the outcome of the first monitoring visit, and whether or not the provider requests the ongoing participation of the independent evaluator.
Annual Programme Evaluation Report (APER)
When a provider considers that the programme and its delivery are stable, and that all established conditions for changing monitoring status are met, application may be made to NZQA to transfer to monitoring by annual programme evaluation report. See Monitoring of NZQA Approved Degrees and Related Qualifications: Guidelines.
