Extension of consent to assess for schools

A school or wharekura must be granted consent before they can assess candidates against standards on the NZQF. All accredited schools and wharekura are automatically granted consent for the domains listed as the Base Scope of Consent to Assess for Schools (BSCS).

Schools or wharekura wishing to assess against standards beyond the BSAS must apply to extend the scope of their consent to assess.

Apply for extension of consent to assess

To apply to NZQA for extension of consent to assess for your school, contact your School Relationship Manager (SRM) if you wish to discuss the detail of your application. Otherwise, follow these steps.

  1. Consult with all departments in your school to determine the scope of the extension of consent that is required. Check what consents the school already holds and decide which additional standards, domains or sub-fields to apply for.
  2. Download the relevant Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR) (formerly known as AMAP) for each standard, see Search Directory of Assessment Standards. Read the CMR carefully to identify the requirements you need to meet.
You will apply to the relevant standard-setting body (SSB) for use of their standards. In many cases, this will be an industry training organisation (ITO).
  3. Contact the SSB/ITO to obtain their support for your application. They may provide you with a template or guide to assist you in making your application. If NZQA is the SSB, make contact with your SRM for how to proceed.
  4. Complete the Attestation for meeting Industry or Sector-specific requirements (DOC, 34KB) to assure the SSB/ITO that you comply with all the listed requirements.
  5. Use the draft letter template (DOC, 25KB) to seek support from the SSB/ITO for use of their standard. NZQA will not consider any application that does not include the required support in writing.
  6. Prepare an application to NZQA by using the application for extension (DOC, 397KB) (letter and form).
  7. Send this application, along with a copy of the letter of support from the SSB/ITO, to your school's SRM.

    Send the application to:
    School Relationship Manager
    School Quality Assurance and Liaison
    NZQA
    125 The Terrace
    PO Box 160
    Wellington 6140

What happens next?

Once the application is received, the SRM analyses the application, and either approves it or requests further information. The approval process takes about 10 working days.

After this time, you should receive confirmation of the extension of consent to assess. These standards will be included in your school's list of accreditations and you may begin assessing students.

You will receive an invoice for $200 + GST once your application has been processed and approved.

You can view your school's consents on the website by searching "Education organisations" using the school's name or code.  The school's consents file is also found in "File Downloads" (Accreds.txt) on the school's NZQA secure website and can be uploaded to the school's Student Management System database.
