External Moderation of Internal Assessment 2008

Please note the following points:

  • Full-time moderators will be in place for 2008 in most subject areas.
  • There will be 12 submission dates, from 25 February through to late October. Schools will be notified of their 2008 submission dates by 7 November 2007.
  • Those schools with February and March submission dates will be notified of their moderation plans by 7 December 2007. Moderation plans identify which standards have been selected for external moderation. Other schools will be notified of their moderation plans progressively as the plans are completed.
  • In order to achieve the goal of increasing the amount of student work moderated to 10%, the number of standards selected will be increased approximately threefold. Sample size will remain at 8 students per achievement standard and 4 students per unit standard.
  • Schools should keep all 2007 assessment materials, where possible, until 2008 moderation requirements are known.
  • Random sampling will be a feature of 2008 moderation submission. For this reason, schools should keep all student work assessed in 2008 until further notice.

It is vital that schools have implemented good internal moderation procedures that are documented and monitored. Schools who use the Internal Moderation Summary model for every standard assessed comment that problems at external moderation time are dramatically reduced.

A comprehensive discussion of good practice was published in Assessment Matters A2005/016: Internal moderation

National Moderator Reports

These reports contain summary comments from National Moderators for teachers, assessors and other interested parties. Their purpose is to give an overview of moderators' findings. They aim to disseminate ideas about good practice and to enhance understanding of the national standard.
