Education for Sustainability

The Ministry of Education has developed a series of achievement standards at levels 2 and 3 for Education for Sustainability (for use from 2008). No level 1 standards are proposed at this stage. The level 3 achievement standards are now registered and available on the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) website:

This means both level 2 and level 3 Education for Sustainability achievement standards are available for use in 2009. They have been registered under the domain Environmental Sustainability and teachers should use this name when undertaking a search on the website.

Assessment Specifications for the externally assessed level 2 and level 3 standards have also been published and are also available on the NZQA website. Level 2 will be assessed using an examination and level 3 will be assessed using a submitted portfolio.

Moderation of the internally assessed standards will be conducted in the same way as all other subjects. Schools must submit their assessment materials and schedules, along with samples of student evidence if assessed before the school's submission date. Principal's Nominees will be contacted by School Relationship Managers to nominate standards for moderation.
