Appeal or further clarification of external Moderation Reports

When schools have concerns with an external Moderation Report they may contact NZQA to seek clarification about moderator comments on the report or to appeal moderation decisions. Concerns or further clarification could include such issues as reasons for moderator decisions about the assessment materials meeting the national standard, assessor judgements on student work, and guidance about assessing the standard. Errors could be corrected using this process too. Teachers or departments should discuss issues with the Principal's Nominee to decide whether it is appropriate to submit an appeal.

The Moderation Appeal Cover Sheet (opposite) has been updated to include tick boxes for the teacher or department to indicate whether they are seeking "further clarification" or wish to "appeal" decisions on the Moderation Report.

Teachers should outline the specific concerns on the Appeal Cover Sheet. The moderator will respond to the specific issues which are raised by the school.

The materials sent for moderation appeals must be submitted with the Appeal Cover Sheet and the Moderation Report. Additional materials not originally submitted cannot be considered with an appeal. The Principal's Nominee will forward the materials to the School Relationship Manager.

Appeals should be submitted to NZQA within 20 school days of having the moderation materials returned to the school.

Schools should expect appeals to be returned within four weeks.
