A2009/016 - 29 May 2009Notation for composition standards in MusicThis circular is to clarify the acceptable types of evidence for assessing "notation" for composition standards in Music. The information applies to the internally assessed achievement standards 90014, 90266 and 90775. It also applies for "representation" of compositions in unit standards 10654, 10655 and 10656. The purpose of notation in the composition standards is to communicate the intentions of the composer to another musician. For students, notation refers to the way they represent their musical ideas for other musicians. For the purposes of assessment, music may be recorded or written as appropriate to the style or genre of the composition. Acceptable evidence includes standard music manuscript notation, lead sheet (melody, chords and rhythm), tab, graphic notation, pictorial score, narrative description, audio recording or a combination of these. If the composer is using a recording as the primary representation of their creative intentions, the quality of the sound and the instrumental parts should be as clear as possible.EnquiriesCirculars are available from the Qualifications authority website (www.nzqa.govt.nz/publications/circulars).
