Format of the 2006 assessment in Scholarship Latin30 June 2006 - SC2006/004The English Latin Scholarship examination paper in 2006 will follow exactly the same format as last year’s paper. There will be two passages for translation: one unfamiliar Latin prose, and one poetry by Virgil. Each passage will have accompanying questions requiring the use of analytical skills to demonstrate critical appreciation of language, style and context. The overall mark for the examination will be 32. Each translation task will be marked out of 8 using a combined measure of vocabulary, grammar and fluency skills. Each set of analytical questions will be marked out of 8 for valid and perceptive responses. Successful candidates will be those who complete all four tasks to an exceptionally high standard and candidates are encouraged to pay careful attention to time allocation in the examination. The assessment specifications for Scholarship Latin for 2006 are similar to those for 2005 but in 2006 the expectation is stated that candidates are to be familiar with literary terms for Levels 2/3 and additional Level 3 terms (see Appendix 3 – www.tki.org.nz/ncea). The 2006 Latin examination is to be conducted on Thursday 23 November 2006. The examination writing teamThe examining panel in 2006 is a highly qualified and experienced group of secondary teachers, some of whom are also involved in the marking process. The marking processIn 2005 two markers worked at the same venue to mark all the papers. Extensive checkmarking of papers occurred throughout the marking process. A similar marking process will be used in 2006. Over January, NZQA will work alongside the Scholarship Technical Advisory Group, comprising Professor Gary Hawke, Head of the School of Government at Victoria University, Professor John Hattie, Faculty of Education, University of Auckland and Professor Terry Crooks, Director of The Educational Research Unit, University of Otago, to determine the cut off points for the award of Scholarship. NZQA will be advised by the panel leader in this process. The results of the 2006 Scholarship examinations will be distributed to candidates by mid February 2007.
