Format of the 2006 assessment in Scholarship Geography

7 August 2006 - SC2006/019

Scholarship Geography will be assessed using a resource based written examination. The resource booklet will be similar in format to the resource booklet produced for the 2004 and 2005 Scholarship Geography examinations. It will contain a range of text and visual material relating to the selected geographic context (theme and settings) including case study information from different settings. Although the context selected will not relate specifically to the Year 13 / Level 3 course of study in Geography, candidates will be expected to apply their geographic skills and understanding to carry out an analysis of the context in order to complete three tasks .

Candidates will be expected to include general geographic information, ideas and understanding in their answers as well as material about the context provided in the resource booklet.

Candidates will be required to complete three tasks involving selecting and extracting, and processing and presenting of information. There will be a requirement for the candidates to:

  • complete a diagram showing the application of geographic ideas and geographic understanding in relation to the study context. Candidates will be required to choose a diagram type that is suited to the information and requirements of the task. Candidates will also be required to write a short explanation about a geographic idea shown in their diagram
  • write an essay discussing perspectives in relation to a specific case study (setting) and to the specific geographic theme
  • write an illustrated geographic essay involving critical evaluation and transfer of knowledge and ideas in relation to the study context.
A mark out of 8 will be allocated to each of these three tasks providing an overall result out of 24 marks.

The 2006 Geography examination is to be conducted on Saturday 2 December 2006.

The marking process

The marking process will include an initial benchmarking meeting at the start of the marking process to confirm the schedule and establish clear and consistent schedule interpretations. Regular meetings of the panel will be held throughout the marking to check mark and monitor marker consistency. All top papers and those around the Scholarship cut-off will be re-marked by the panel.

Over January, NZQA will work alongside the Scholarship Technical Advisory Group, comprising Professor Gary Hawke, Head of the School of Government at Victoria University, Professor John Hattie, Faculty of Education, University of Auckland and Professor Terry Crooks, Director of The Educational Research Unit, University of Otago, to determine the cut off points for the award of Scholarship. NZQA will be advised by the panel leader in this process.

The results of the 2006 Scholarship examinations will be distributed to candidates by mid February 2007.
