Format of the 2007 Assessment in Scholarship Music

15 June 2007 - SC2007/003

The format of Scholarship Music 2007 differs from previous years because the standard has been revised to allow assessment across both Domains of Music – Music Studies and Making Music.

There will be three separate sections. Each section will be marked out of 8 to give a total of 24 marks.

Each candidate will submit one portfolio, either as a performer, composer or musicologist.

The first section will be the Portfolio. The Portfolio requirements are outlined in the Assessment Specifications. The Assessment Specifications can be accessed at the following URL on NZQA’s website:

Attached to the Assessment Specifications is an Authenticity Form. This form will need to be completed by each candidate. Each candidate must hand their completed copy of the form, with their portfolio, to the examination supervisor at the time of the examination: 2.00pm Wednesday 5 December 2007. A copy of this Authenticity Form is attached to this newsletter.

Candidates presenting a portfolio as a performer or a composer must submit a recording of one substantial piece of their work and other recordings of 1 minute each as part of the portfolio. This must allow the assessors to meaningfully evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the candidate.

The other two sections will be completed during the examination on Wednesday 5 December.

The two sections in the examination are:

  • Individual score extracts.
  • Comparison of two or more unprepared score extracts.
  • Each of these sections contains four questions. Candidates are required to answer only one question from each section, therefore responding to two of the eight questions in total.
  • Questions will require a conventional essay format response and it is recommended that candidates be encouraged to qualify their responses and analytical decisions to add depth and breadth to the quality of their answers.
  • For candidate reference there will be 12 unprepared score extracts presented in a separate resource booklet. Each section of the examination paper requires candidates to choose scores from this resource.
  • Candidates may select and refer to any given score extract once only.
