Scholarship First Language Speakers - Decision for 20083 August 2007 - SC2007/005As advised by the Minister of Education in his media release of 19 June, all students are eligible to receive a monetary award for Scholarship languages, including those who enter the Scholarship examination in their first or native language. This decision will apply from 2008. The rationale, that it "creates a level playing field for all students, regardless of their first language", is a matter of fairness. The assessment specifications for the 2008 examinations will reflect this decision by advising that all instructions and questions for the 2008 Scholarship Languages examinations will be written in English, and answers to question one of the writing task, assessing aural comprehension, will also have to be written in English. Process for 2007 Scholarship Languages ExaminationsIn October of 2007 schools will again be required to identify first language speakers from their 2007 languages scholarship examination candidates, and forward this declaration to the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.
