S2009/008 - 13 March 2009Draft Guidelines for Further Assessment OpportunitiesSince the introduction of NCEA in 2002, there has been an ongoing need to clarify and refine understanding of a number aspects relating to managing national assessment, especially where there has been diversity of practice between schools or departments within schools. Opposite is a consultation document prepared by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) providing guidelines for further assessment opportunities in schools. It has been prepared after consultation with a wide range of sector representatives. The intention is to reduce current diversity of understanding of what is sometimes referred to as "reassessment", and consequently to reduce any credibility issues, perceptions of unfairness, and possible over-assessment of students. At the same time, the guidelines will enable teachers to exercise professional judgment in their assessment. NZQA encourages schools to consider and discuss these guidelines before responding, by 8 May 2009, completing the feedback form. This will allow time for the guidelines to be finalised, published, and distributed by the middle of Term 2. Schools will then be able to include the relevant material in their internal assessment policies and procedures documentation for 2010.
