New Rules & Procedures for Further Assessment Opportunities

In March of this year the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) distributed a consultation document regarding further assessment opportunities in schools (see SecQual circular S2009/008). The intention was to reduce current diversity of understanding of what is sometimes referred to as "reassessment", and consequently to reduce any credibility issues, perceptions of unfairness, and possible over-assessment of students.

A substantial number of teachers responded to the consultation. In general, respondents' feedback was very positive and comment sought further clarifications. This feedback has been considered by a wide range of sector representatives and some changes have been made.

A key change has been to change the status of the proposed guidelines to NZQA Assessment & Examination Rules and Procedures. From mid-2009 schools will be asked to begin implementation of these new rules and procedures into their school wide policies and procedures. These requirements will become a part of the 2010 Assessment and Examination Rules and Procedures. In 2010, NZQA will report on the implementation of these rules and procedures as part of its Managing National Assessment system reviews and as required.
