S2009/038 - 27 October 2009Derived Grade process for external assessment 2009In 2009, the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) consulted schools on changes to the previous Compassionate Consideration process. Key changes include renaming the process to the Derived Grade process and using pre-existing, standard specific evidence for estimating grades, rather than reference candidates. These documents can be photocopied as required. Advising candidatesTo assist Principal’s Nominees in advising candidates whether an application is appropriate, a set of guidelines is attached to this circular. ApplicationsThe Derived Grade application form for 2009 contains sections to be completed by the candidate, a medical practitioner or other independent professional (if required), and the school. Derived Grade application forms must be returned to the Principal’s Nominee by Monday, 7 December. All applications must reach NZQA by 4 pm, Tuesday 8 December 2009. Education for Sustainability, Graphics, Technology and Visual ArtsApplications for a Derived Grade based on illness and misadventure for externally assessed Education for Sustainability, Graphics and Technology standards should also be made online. Schools are responsible for the derived grade, in cases of illness and misadventure, for Visual Arts levels 1 and 2. The procedure and the application form for level 3 Visual Arts are available on the subject-specific page. The Correspondence SchoolWhere a course is delivered by The Correspondence School, the home school must contact The Correspondence School directly to advise them that the student has made an application for a derived grade.
