Foundation Learning given a boost

Learners studying Foundation Learning courses - covering literacy, numeracy and language - can expect a greater focus on their needs and progress with new requirements and guidelines for providers.

NZQA has recently issued Foundation Learning Quality Assurance (FLQA) requirements and provider self-review guide and will begin to integrate them in to quality audits.

Mike Willing, Deputy Chief Executive Quality Assurance says, "We're looking to improve quality assurance processes for foundation learning providers. One of the outcomes of our consultation and trial of proposed FLQA requirements has been a provider self-review guide."

NZQA plans to hold a series of workshops to introduce providers to the requirements and guide.

The FLQA requirements cover six practices: planning and design, resources, staff, learner entry and access, delivery and review and development.

"We encourage providers to use the guide to identify their strengths and weaknesses and work with us to improve. It's not rocket science, just good, continuous improvement practice. The end result will be better courses and gains for learners," Mike says.

"Providers will be expected to meet the FLQA requirements by the beginning of 2009."

For more information, to attend one of the workshops or to obtain a copy of the requirements and guide contact Penny Hoy-Mack on phone 04 4633350, or see the online content.
