Obituary: Dr Monte Ohia Education, both nationally and internationally, lost a great leader with the passing of Dr Monte Ohia in June. Dr Ohia made a major contribution to the education sector through his many roles including: s chool teacher; Maori Advisor for the Education Department, Massey University; Regional Manager, Ministry of Education Rotorua; Pou/ Senior Manager, New Zealand Qualifications Authority; Campus Manager and Strategic Advisor, Te Wananga o Aotearoa; Senior Manager, Christchurch Polytechnic and Institute of Training (CPIT). In April, Dr Ohia had been welcomed as a member of NZQA's Te Roopu Kaituhono (originally named the Kaitiaki Group). The establishment of this group was a significant milestone for NZQA in the implementation of Te Rautaki Maori (NZQA's Maori Strategy). "NZQA was very much looking forward to working with Monte as part of Te Roopu Kaituhono. His experience and knowledge of both matauranga Maori and the role of NZQA would have been invaluable and we are saddened by his passing," NZQA Chief Executive Dr Karen Poutasi said.
