NMIT goes organic

The Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is breaking new ground with the new Certificate in Organic Horticulture that started in July at the Richmond Campus.

The NMIT programme offers students the opportunity to graduate with two qualifications, the National Certificate in Organic Horticulture and the NMIT Certificate in Organic Horticulture, which includes Te Tiriti o Waitangi and work placement components.

The National Certificate in Organic Horticulture is NZQA approved and unit standards assessed and is aimed at people of all ages and stages seeking a career pathway in organic horticulture.

The 20-week, full-time course covers all aspects of organic horticulture, including the philosophy, history and development of organics, organic compost and soil management, organic pest and disease management and planning of organic design systems.

The new programme has been designed in conjunction with the Horticulture Industry Training Organisation to meet the growing demand for credible training in organic horticulture for an expanding industry.

Programme leader Duncan Burns and tutor Jenny North

NMIT programme coordinator Duncan Burns says, "This National Certificate in Organic Horticulture has packaged a lot of these requirements together and offers an exciting career opportunity for people to study in Nelson, a region with an established horticultural industry and rapidly expanding organic sector."

He adds that the Richmond Campus of NMIT is already offering many of the subjects included in the new course and is well positioned to expand the programme for the new National Certificate.

Course fees for 2002 are $2,383 and prospective applicants should contact the office administrator, Richmond Campus of NMIT. Students may be eligible for student allowances and accommodation is available to students at Franklyn Hall, Nelson.
