Dance assessment specification

Format of the assessment

Evidence is to be presented as a portfolio consisting of:

• a DVD recording of the candidate's own choreography and performance
• a workbook containing written and visual evidence.

The DVD recording

The recording will:

• include one 2- to 5-minute dance choreographed by the candidate. This choreography must be a complete work. The choreography may be a solo, duet, or group dance. This will be assessed.
• include, in addition to the dance above, a further total of 2-5 minutes of dance performance excerpts from one or more dances and/or dance genres performed by the candidate. The performance(s) may be a solo, duet, or group dance. This will provide a context for the candidate's reflection on performance but will not be assessed.
• include material on the DVD recording that may have been assessed for level 3 Dance achievement standards 90594, 90595, and/or 90596]
• follow the protocols for filming choreography established by NZQA i.e. a one-camera long shot with minimal editing.

The workbook

The workbook pages:

• will be displayed in an A4 clearfile folder
• will be limited to the equivalent of 18 single-sided A4 pages, inclusive of the introduction and contents pages (additional pages will not be assessed)
• must be visible (papers will not be removed from the sleeves by markers)
• will consist of written reflection and may include sketches, photographs, diagrams, fabric/gel swatches, etc
• will include an introductory page and a contents page, listing headings, and page numbers
• must include reflections on the choreographic processes and products (conceptualising, producing, and evaluating choreographic decisions e.g. selecting a stimulus, choosing relevant technologies, developing a choreographic intention, choosing appropriate style, choosing a method to produce movement)
• must include reflections on performance processes and products (learning, practising, interpreting, refining movements, applying expressive qualities, and working with aspects of technology that contribute to a performance). 

Authenticity

Schools are required to verify that the material presented for external assessment is the candidate's own work. Download the Scholarship authenticity declaration (DOC, 361KB) and ensure that one completed form is submitted with each candidate's work.  Each completed form must be signed by both the candidate and the candidate's Dance teacher as verification that the work is authentic.
