Latin assessment specification

Scholarship Performance Standard Latin
Mode of Assessment Written Examination
For Year 2012

Format of the assessment

There will be two previously unseen Latin passages, each having one question requiring translation into English and one question requiring analysis. Passages may be attempted in either order.

An introduction to each of the two passages will be given in English.

Resources or information supplied

No reference material or word list may be used. Words outside the prescribed word list for level 3 (see Appendix 1) will be glossed.  The meaning will be given of any word from the prescribed list that has a significantly different meaning in the passages from that on the prescribed list.

Content/Context Details

Passage One will be Latin prose of approximately 120–150 words of literary Latin. Passage Two will be Latin poetry of approximately 15–20 lines of Virgil. Both passages may be abridged. The Latin prose passage may be adapted and may be of a type other than narrative.

Accidence and Syntax used in the passage will conform to the prescribed list for Level 3 (see Appendix 2). Assistance will be given for structures outside the prescribed list. Candidates will be expected to recognise additional structures that commonly appear in typical reading of Virgil for this level (see achievement standard 90508).

Sections of text in both passages will require analysis of the way(s) that language and / style and / or context convey the ideas and intent of the author. The context refers to: Roman history, the geography of the Roman Empire, politics, institutions, customs and values. Candidates will be required to answer all questions on literary analysis and will be expected to be familiar with Literary Terms for Levels 2 / 3 and Additional Level 3 Terms (see Appendix 3).

Marking

Each question will be marked out of 8 to give a total of 32 marks.
