Scholarship Performance Standard Visual Arts
Mode of Assessment Workbook extracts and portfolio
For Year 2012

The submission date for Scholarship submissions is 8 November 2012. Schools will need to ensure that the portfolios and workbooks are collected on this date.

Format of the assessment

Each candidate presents a portfolio and workbook extracts for assessment for Scholarship Visual Arts.

Portfolio specifications

  • Each portfolio is free-standing and consists of THREE A1-sized panels of cardboard that are portrait in orientation.
  • The three panels are hinged with a suitable bookbinder’s self-adhesive tape or a glued binding cloth. The two outside panels fold inwards over the middle panel to ensure that artwork is not damaged.
  • All work is dry and fixed. Work that is not securely attached, is bulky, wet, fragile or containing sharp objects or materials that might cause injury during handling, will be removed and not assessed.
  • Artwork presented for assessment is consistent with the size of the portfolio panels.
  • Three-dimensional work or large-scale work that cannot be included in the portfolio in its original form may be represented by photographs and, where appropriate, accompanied by sketches, headings or diagrams. In such cases, the candidate should provide descriptive information about media and processes used, scale, and site.

The workbook extracts:

  • are displayed in an A3 clearfile folder
  • are limited to the equivalent of eight single-sided A3 pages (additional pages will not be assessed)
  • are displayed as either portrait or landscape in orientation
  • must be visible and in the order to be assessed by the marking panel (pages will not be removed from the sleeves by markers)
  • do not exceed the size of the A3 clearfile folder.

Photographs

For each submission, photograph(s) of the portfolio must accompany the workbook extracts. This clearfile page is in addition to the eight pages of workbook extracts. The photographs are displayed at the front of the folder or book, inside the first plastic envelope. The measurement across the total number of photographs should not exceed 30 centimetres. The photographs are fixed in the same order as the portfolio. The photographs may be displayed in the clearfile as either portrait or landscape in orientation.

Scholarships can be awarded in each field (design, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture) and candidates may make submission(s) in one or more field. Where a candidate chooses to enter and submit work for more than one field, they need to submit a separate portfolio for each. Candidates cannot submit one portfolio for more than one field.

Authenticity

Schools are required to have procedures in place for ensuring the authentication of each candidate’s work. The use of digital and other technologies will need to comply with school policies and procedures for authenticity. NZQA will require assurance that candidate work is authentic.

Content/Context details

Portfolios may have been submitted for level 3 Visual Arts achievement standards 90517 (Design), 90667 (Painting), 90668 (Photography), 90669 (Printmaking), and 90670 (Sculpture) but must be accompanied by the selection of workbook extracts for assessment for the Scholarship performance standard. Workbook pages presented for the Scholarship performance standard may include work that has been assessed previously for any level 3 standards.
