Permissible technology cannot communicate by electronic means and if programmable, must have a reset button.

- Computers may be used only:
- for candidates entering under special assessment conditions where use of a computer is approved by NZQA and is essential to fairly complete the assessment
- in individual subjects where specified by the relevant prescription
and in either case subject to any conditions for the use of computers set down by NZQA.
- Cellphones, pagers and other communication devices are prohibited.
- Calculators with a dictionary or translation function or those identified as having high-level algebraic manipulation capability are prohibited unless specifically allowed by a standard or subject prescription.
- 'Palm tops', 'I Pods', pocket PCs and similar that have storage capacity and an ability to install software to make them operate like a symbolic manipulator are prohibited.
