Latin - clarification of standards

AS90262 (ver 3) Level 2: Demonstrate knowledge of familiar literary Latin passages on a given theme by at least two authors

This standard is causing some difficulties in interpretation.

It is important to look at Explanatory Note 3. in the Standard AS90262. The statement in brackets, "The same two authors do not have to be used for each aspect", indicates that two authors must be used for each of the two aspects. For example, Catullus and Ovid might be used for characterisation and Cicero and Tibullus might be used for literary devices.

AS90117 (ver 3) Level 1: Describe an aspect of Roman civilisation

Note that for Excellence, students must provide information with supporting detail and reasoned judgements. Descriptive material, however detailed, does not meet the criterion for Excellence. Reasoned judgements must also be made.

The use of Latin terms, although not required by the standard, is a useful way of adding detail.

AS90118 (ver 3) Level 1: Describe the contribution of the Romans to one aspect of western civilisation

For Excellence, students must explain comprehensively, i.e. provide information with supporting detail and reasoned judgements, about the contribution of the Romans to one aspect of western civilisation. Detailed descriptive material without reasoned judgements does not meet the criterion for Excellence. The Roman contribution to the aspect of western civilisation should be clear and significant.
