Level 1 expiring Achievement and Unit Standards

90012, 90013, 90014, 90017 expire 31 December 2011. However several Unit Standards have had their expiry date extended to 31 December 2012. For a full list please refer to Level 1 standards

Level 1 new Standards

Performance (91090)

While it is still expected that students are performing in "at least" their third year of group instrumental lessons, and student evidence will look very similar to 90012, there is an adjustment required to interpret 91090. It is important to consider exactly what the standard is asking and how students will exhibit the step-ups to perform "effectively" (Merit criteria) and "convincingly" (Excellence). Check the criteria carefully when making judgements. These have been unpacked for teachers and students at TKI. Further, by using the language of the criteria in teacher commentary, both students and moderators will clearly see how judgements are made.

Composition (91092)

The comments for 91090 in regard to unpacking criteria also apply for 91092.

For compositions composed collaboratively please include a group list of students with the moderation submission. Suggestions for assessing student’s individual "creative contribution" to a group composition will be included in 2012 Best Practice Workshops.

Music Works (91095)

When reworking tasks used for assessing 90017 consider using more open-ended assessment tasks to allow students to demonstrate "breadth" (Merit criteria) and "comprehensive" (Excellence) knowledge of contrasting contexts. Students working at curriculum level 6 will have the opportunity to analyse music from different contexts, together with being able to consider and reflect on the influence of these musical examples in their own lives (NZC).

Suggestions for contrasting contexts

  • Handel "Water Music"/Farr "From the Depths Sound the Sea Gongs."
  • Vivaldi "Spring" from the Four Seasons/Brubeck "Take Five."
  • Stravinsky "Rite of Spring"/Hendrix "Purple Haze."
  • Mozart "Eine Kleine Nacht Musik"/Dalvanius Prime "Poi E."
  • Gershwin "Summertime"/Crowded House "Four Seasons in one Day."
  • Copland "Fanfare for Common Man"/Farr "From the Depths Sound the Sea Gongs."
  • McLeod "Childhood"/Schumann "Scenes from Childhood."
  • Clara Schumann "Nocturne in F major"/Gillian Whitehead "Lullaby for Matthew."
  • Handel "Hallelujah Chorus"/Count Basie "Front Burner."

Teachers are encouraged to write their own assessment tasks based on TKI and NCEA exemplars.

Level 2 transition 2012

90264, 90265, 90266, 90267 and 90270 expire 31 December 2012.

If using new level 2 standards in 2012, be advised that 90270 (music works) will be offered externally (91277).

Investigate an aspect of New Zealand music (91278)

In order for students to investigate their topic "in-depth" (Merit criteria) or "comprehensively" (Excellence), teachers are advised to guide students as to topic choices.
