NZ Diploma in Business version three (effective from 1 July 2011)

Version three changes

Version three of the New Zealand Diploma in Business (NZDipBus) includes the following changes to the qualification:

  • The rules for credit transfer and unspecified credit have been tightened to reduce the total amount of credit allowable from 200 to 80 out of 240 credits through this means.
  • The results reporting code for assessment of prior learning (APL) has been separated from the code for credit transfer.

These changes affect the basis on which the NZDipBus qualification can be awarded and apply to all candidates enrolling for their first NZDipBus prescription/course to be delivered and assessed in a term or semester that starts after 30 June 2011.  Any exceptions will be considered by NZQA on a case-by-case basis on application to NZQA.

Credit transfer and assessment of local prescriptions

For version three of the qualification, a candidate may be credited with a maximum of four prescriptions (80 credits) through credit transfer and unspecified credit.  These 80 credits may include:

  1. a maximum of four national prescriptions through specified credit transfer (80 credits)
  2. a maximum of one unspecified credit transfer (20 credits)
  3. a maximum of two local prescriptions as unspecified credit (40 credits).

A minimum of 60 credits at level 6 must relate to assessed national NZDipBus prescriptions (as opposed to credit transfer or assessment in local prescriptions).

Assessment of Prior Learning (APL)

TEOs are required to report to NZQA any credits awarded as a result of APL (which is direct assessment of an individual’s skills and knowledge against prescription or qualification outcomes).  Under version three of the qualification, APL will be reported under an 'R' code.

There is no limit to how many credits can be awarded by APL.

Transition arrangements for the NZDipBus (version two to three)

The following transition arrangements apply:

  • Version three of the NZDipBus (Level 6) is available from 1 July 2011.
  • Any candidate who enrols for their first NZDipBus prescription that is to be delivered and assessed in a semester or term that starts after 30 June 2011 may complete only version three of the qualification.
  • Only the 400-600 series of NZDipBus prescriptions will be counted towards version three.
  • Any candidate part way through version two of the qualification may elect to complete either version two or version three of the qualification.
  • The last date for award of version two is 30 June 2013.

Consideration of adverse effect for candidates

Candidates who consider that they are adversely affected by these transition arrangement rules may apply to have their case considered by NZQA.  Circumstances contributing to adverse effect may include (for example):

  • specific work or family pressure and their effect on study
  • health or disability issues and their effect on study
  • need to change career direction.

An applicant must detail how he or she has been adversely affected.  A results transcript should also be requested from NZQA Tertiary Records and included with your application.

Applications must be sent to Tertiary Assessment and Moderation.

Applications must be received prior to 31 December 2014.  NZQA will endeavour to notify applicants of the outcome within thirty working days of receipt.
